Ovarian cysts can occur in women of all ages. Although the vast majority of cysts are benign, malignant ones do occur. Pelvic pain and discomfort are common symptoms in women with ovarian cysts, but the condition can sometimes go unnoticed for long periods of time.
Investigations
Investigations are imperative for the diagnosis of the treatment of ovarian cysts. Investigations include tumour markers and additional scans (MRI or CT scan). They are required to ascertain if they are benign.
Treatments
With conservative treatment, the majority of minor cysts will resolve on their own.
Cyst removal surgery is recommended in the following situations:
- The cyst is causing symptoms that are hindering the daily life activities of a patient.
- A repeat scan shows the cyst continues to grow in size or if the cyst has not resolved.
- If there is any suspicion of malignancy.
Surgical Procedures
Most ovarian cyst surgeries are performed laparoscopically (minimally invasively, through a small incision), or other methods can apply, depending on the size and other factors.
- Cystectomy - where the cyst is removed, but the ovary is saved
- Oophorectomy - When the entire ovary and tube are removed, along with the cyst.
